"If you want to learn what someone fears losing, watch what they photograph."
"The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed."
I had a nightmare last night.
I dreamt we met for an hour, clasped coffee cups
in the midst of conversation, smiled at each other
with open lips and wet teeth; and
when you left — I let you go
without taking you by the hand
and pressing my lips up against yours
just to see what it felt like.

"You want tangible, social benefits to writing fiction? There are people walking around today because other people wrote words that spoke to them. That’ll do."
Everyone who terrifies you is sixty-five percent water.
And everyone you love is made of stardust, and I know sometimes
you cannot even breathe deeply, and
the night sky is no home, and
you have cried yourself to sleep enough times
that you are down to your last two percent, but
nothing is infinite,
not even loss.
You are made of the sea and the stars, and one day
you are going to find yourself again.

"All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you: the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was. If you can get so that you can give that to people, then you are a writer."
